What is the meaning of Fasting?

The Season of Lent is a season of fasting. There are 2 public days of fasting during the season of Lent – Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Jesus strongly advises us to do our own private fasting during the Holy season (Matthew 6:16-18). Pope Francis advocates a very practical way of fasting which can be practiced by both children and parents. Below is the Holy Father’s list of fasting ideas:

  • Fast from hurtful words… and say kind words.
  • Fast from sadness… and be filled with gratitude.
  • Fast from anger… and be filled with patience.
  • Fast from worries… and have trust in God.
  • Fast from bitterness… and fill your hearts with joy.
  • Fast from pressures… and be prayerful.
  • Fast from pessimism… and be filled with hope.
  • Fast from grudges… and be reconciled.
  • Fast from selfishness… and be compassionate to others.
  • Fast from words… and be silent so you can listen.
